Jennings & Shackleton Compete In World Junior Championships For Team GBR

Middlebury alpine skiers Toby Jennings and Dominic Shackleton represented Great Britain (GBR) at the recent FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships. The international event was contested from February 27 through March 6 in Tarvisio, Italy.

"Dominic and Toby completed their first years in our program and have contributed positively to the team as individuals," said Middlebury head alpine coach Stever Bartlett. "Dominic had an incredibly fast second run in the GS (second quickest of all competitors), showing where his top level can be against the world's top juniors. Toby's experience will no doubt help him as he pursues skiing for the GBR national team in the future. Growing up and living in Europe, ski racing in the United States and on the collegiate circuit has been an adjustment for him. He has enjoyed success this winter."

Shackleton earned a trio of top-25 finishes as an individual. During the giant slalom (GS), he carved run times of 1:00.56 and 1:02.60 for a combined clocking of 2:03.16 and a 12th-place showing. Shackleton was 24th in the men's super G (58.47) as just one run was contested. He also raced to 25th in the men's downhill, skiing down the mountain with times of 51.45 and 50.95 for a 1:42.40. During the slalom, Shackleton completed his initial trip in 50.99 seconds but didn't finish run number two. He also was a member of the combined team, finishing 40th as his partner didn't complete his run. Jennings took part in the men's slalom with an opening-run effort of 54.72 seconds but wasn't able to complete his second trip.

"It was really cool to see my development compared to my first world juniors two years ago," stated Shackleton. "It was awesome to represent GBR and Middlebury on the world stage, and I'm looking forward to the next opportunity."

"It was an honour for me to represent my country and Middlebury at the Junior World Championships," said Jennings. "I am thankful for all the opportunities Middlebury's ski team has given me on my journey to compete throughout the world."

Shackleton competed for Middlebury in each carnival this season. He posted back-to-back 14th-place finishes in the slalom during the Saint Michael's and Dartmouth Carnivals, while the Panther skied to a season-best eighth in the giant slalom at Dartmouth. At the EISA Regional Championships, he was 11th in the slalom. He was selected to represent Middlebury in the NCAA Championships but opted to train and participate instead in the FIS Junior World Ski Championships. Jennings finished in 42nd place during the GS at Dartmouth as a non-scoring team member. He was 31st as a non scorer in the slalom a week later at the Middlebury Carnival, while Jennings posted a season-best 24th-place effort in the GS the next day.
