The Panthers celebrated their seniors on Friday night.
The Middlebury men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the regular season hosting its home invitational. The Panthers tallied 13 first-place finishes over the two-day span with
Samuel Hughes spotlighting the event with five victories (three relay, two individual), while
Paul Shen and
John Masiello each claimed four (two relay, two individual). Before Friday night's action, the team honored seniors
Pierce Bigelow,
Matthew Hensel, Hughes,
Terry Luongo,
Jack Paul,
Will Sonne and
Jack Undercofler.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Shen touched the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.27 seconds) and the 200 breaststroke (2:04.00). The Panther teamed up with Hughes, Andrew Dou and Hensel to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:24.18). Joining Shen on the winning 200 medley relay squad was Undercofler, Dou and Hughes, combining for a time of 1:32.06.
- Masiello secured the crown in the 200 individual medley (IM) with a clocking of 1:54.11. He joined teammates Jason Chiappinelli, Prin Chantarangkul and Hughes to triumph in the 200 freestyle relay (1:24.06).
- In the 400 free relay, Masiello, Chiappinelli and Hughes teamed up with Hensel to earn top-honors with a time of 3:07.70.
- Rounding out the relay victories was Masiello, Hensel, Rodin McKenna and Bigelow, clocking in at 6:54.41 to claim the 800 freestyle.
- Stefanos Salas had a strong showing over the weekend, touching the wall first in the 400 IM (4:10.19) and the 200 butterfly (1:56.54). Salas also secured runner-up honors in the 200 IM with a clocking of 1:54.17.
- Hughes secured triumphs in the 100 (51.47 seconds) and 200 backstroke (1:51.90) events.
- Dou rounded out the individual victories, stopping the clock in 24.31 seconds in the 50 back to claim top honors.
- Sonne secured a pair of runner-up finishes, touching the wall in 1:46.31 during the 200 free and 1:56.58 in the 200 fly.
- Owen White placed second off the 3-meter diving board with 445.60 points, while also securing third off the 1-meter (226.25 points).
- Rounding out the second-place finishers was Ben Bryan, clocking in at 52.13 seconds in the 100 back.
- Also finishing in third was Ivars Emerson in the 50 back (25.09 seconds), Shen in the 50 free (21.68 seconds) and Undercofler in the 200 back (1:54.69).
The Panthers are idle for nearly three weeks, gearing up for the NESCAC Championship. The four-day event begins on Thursday, February 20 in the Middlebury Natatorium.
